Does Revolut automatically know which currency to use?
Revolut does not magically know the currency you meant.
Revolut does not magically know the currency you meant. It holds balances in the currencies your account supports, and it converts when you spend or exchange, using the rule in the fee schedule for your plan and your region.
If you hold dollars and pay a merchant who charges euros, the app converts. If you already hold euros, it can spend the euro balance instead. Which one happens is shown before you confirm, or in the transaction afterwards. Weekend and over-limit exchange fees are plan rules. Read the current fee page in the app. This note will not quote a percentage that Revolut can change.
The card network is a different question: Visa or Mastercard. A conversion inside the app is not a bank wire, and it is not a promise that the rate you saw yesterday is the rate today.
